State Implementation and Classification
Description
To provide the academic knowledge required by
students to prepare them to take command or to be
second-in-command of a Merchant Ship trading around
the world, in accordance with the training standards
specified in the 1989 syllabus developed by the
Maritime Industry Development Committee, in
consultation with the Department of Transport and
Communications (DOTC).
To meet the requirements for the training of ship's
masters as laid down in the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) conference on the Standards of
Training Certification and Watchkeeping for
Seafarers (STCW), of 1978.
To prepare students for oral examination by the
Department of Transport and Communications (DOTC).
Successful completion of this course and the
Department of Transport and Communications oral
examination will lead to the issue of a Certificate
of Competency as Master Class 1 or 2, or Chief Mate
Class 1 or 2.
