State Implementation and Classification
Description
To provide the academic knowledge required by
students to prepare them to take command or to be
second-in-command of a Merchant Ship trading around
the world, in accordance with the training standards
specified in the 1989 syllabus developed by the
Maritime Industry Development Committee, in
consultation with AMSA.
To meet the requirements of the training of ship's
masters as laid down in the International Maritime
Organisation conference on the Standards of Training
Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers of 1978
as amended.
To prepare students for oral examination by AMSA.
Successful completion of this course and the AMSA
oral examination will lead to the issue by AMSA of a
Certificate of Competency as Master Class 1 or 2,
Chief Mate Class 1 or 2 depending upon the length
and type of industrial experience obtained by the
student.

Industrial experience is as approved by the Department of
Marine and Harbours (WA) (DMH). Standard DEVET exemption
procedure will apply in recognition of prior learning.
