To introduce learners to basic haematological procedures by providing them with
a theoretical and practical grounding in the tests performed in a routine
laboratory.
This module is designed to develop basic skills and is the first of three
haematology modules. It has a heavy emphasis on quality control, laboratory
safety and the exercise of sound laboratory practice that shows an empathy with
patient needs.

Range of Variables
This module may be delivered either on or off-the-job.
Although many of the manual techniques referred to in the document are no
longer routinely used in haematology laboratories, they provide the skills and
knowledge which underpin the use of automated methods and the intelligent
interpretation of data generated by automated technology.
Where delivery is in a TAFE or similar environment, a field trip to a hospital
or private pathology laboratory to compare a range of blood cell autoanalysers
is desirable. However, if this is not possible a trade exhibit could be
arranged. Many suppliers have videos which can provide any additional
information.
This module has a significant practical component. Theory and practical work
should be integrated wherever possible. Learning activities should also be
structured to promote team work and contingency planning to ensure efficient
use of resources. To
