Description
To provide participants with knowledge of the legal issues relating to the criminal justice system, and the skills and attitudes needed to be effective community advocates providing support and empowering women disadvantaged by the criminal justice system.
Range of Variables
This unit is intended to prepare participants for direct service delivery. The emphasis is on practical and experiential learning. Lecturers should preferably be experienced as community advocates and be able to draw on personal experience and case material in order to demonstate the use of community advaocay skills and knowledge. Lecturers must provide up-to-date information on the legislation and therefore must be prepared to research and ensure they include any changes which may be of relevance to this curriculum.
Students should be warned against giving advice on legal matters and a strong distinction needs to be drawn between the role of a support worker and the role of a lawyer or accountant. There should be a strong emphasis on client empowerment.
