Description
To introduce students to historical views of age in
Western Society and understand how such views may
differ in other cultures.
To enable students to evaluate present services for
the aged.
To enable students to plan services for the aged
based on a developmental rather than a dependency
model of age.
To develop students' ability to respond to the needs
of the aged in a rapidly changing technological
society.
To clarify and develop students' own views on the needs of the aged in today's
society.
To develop strategies students will be able to use
in professional practice.

Essay on subject areas within the course such as:
- Cross-cultural view of age : status of aged in traditional
society.
- Growing old in a work-oriented society; problems of
transition from work to retirement.
- Ageing, housing and lifestyle.
The essay should show evidence of inquiry and
research with particular reference to integrating
current theories with past and future perspectives
on the aged. To see the aged in terms of a
continually changing society.
Assignment on topic related to area of
professional interest 25%
This assignment aims to develop skills in the area
of planning a program for the aged, or designing a
service, which incorporates new initiatives. This
could be:
- Designing a work to retirement program for elderly
workers. (Can include counselling intervention.)
- Plan an organisation such as a Grey Power Job Bureau.
- Design a booklet (ideas for a community service for Older
Women, alternative care service, etc.).
- Outline an Education for Leisure program.
- Submit a report on the need for a School for Seniors in
your area, workplace.
Students should identify needs and conduct an
interview to obtain some brief overview of the
requirements of the service/program. They should
then endeavour to be innovative and incorporate
their own ideas, topics from the course and the
information from their needs survey into a suitable
program.
Participation in seminars and discussion

Students will show commitment to learning about the
aged in society by participating in tutorial
discussions and exercises.
