Description
To develop understanding of the styles of music,
selected for practical studies, in their social and
historical context.
To explore some of the major exponents of the style,
their repertoire and contribution to the style.
To encourage the student to listen critically to a
large number of artists.
To encourage students to contribute to discussion
and provide an opportunity for students to formulate
and state point of view.

Participation. 10%
Participation includes punctuality, listening
skills, presenting a considered opinion and phrasing
questions carefully.
Oral assessment. 40%
Four class presentations of 15 minutes each, with
recordings and/or live examples which summarise
research on a relevant topic chosen by student in
consultation with tutor (10% each).
Written assessment. 50%
1,000-word essay on relevant topic chosen by student
in consultation with tutor.
Students must achieve a pass in the written
assignment and at least two of the oral assignments.
