Description
To provide basic knowledge and skills that enable the learner to quickly adapt
to instruction in a tissue culture laboratory. The learner will be able to
perform basic tasks using sterile procedure and become familiar with the
special requirements for manipulating animal cells, good housekeeping
techniques, safety issues and the day-to-day needs to be considered when
maintaining cell lines.
Competence in tissue culture techniques can only come from constant
application. However, this module will develop in the learner a high degree of
responsibility for his/her work and a sense of obligation to constantly
self-evaluate his/her technique.
The learner must be able to identify a failed technique, troubleshoot it and
alter the process to prevent the failure recurring. This will foster a
proactive attitude to Quality Assurance and Quality Control.

This module can be offered on or off-the-job. Where the provider is a TAFE
institution, it is anticipated that the cell cultures will be acquired for the
classes since the long term maintenance of cell lines is too costly. To
minimise class preparation, practicals involving cell manipulation could be
offered in blocks. Three by six hour practical blocks is one possible scheme
with the rest of the time used for lectures, demonstrations, tutorials and
practicals not involving cells. TAFE institutions should consider the use of
Saturday classes for such a module.
The full material should be spread over the semester to allow the learner to
prepare for the sessions, write up reports and research material.

- a Biohazard Class II cabinet
- inverted microscope
- positive filtration apparatus
