Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop an understanding of identity in mentoring people of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
It requires the ability to understand factors affecting the Cultural identities of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.
The unit applies to individuals who intend to work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People in a mentoring relationship in a community setting or a workplace setting.
In this unit the term Aboriginal is used in keeping with the current policy of the NSW Government and the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Incorporated. Indigenous Australians is the collective term used by the Commonwealth Government to refer to Aboriginal People and/or Torres Strait Islander People. Educators need to confirm what terminology is accepted by local communities and must demonstrate sensitivity to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander issues and cultures.
This unit recognises that there is no single Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Culture and that Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals and communities are diverse. Protocols must therefore be identified according to the local context.
Being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent is a requirement for trainers who deliver this unit due to the cultural knowledge requirements.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication
