Elements and Performance Criteria
Determine properties of engineering materials established from a tension test.
  • 1.1 Create a tension test to industry standards to establish a load extension graph.
  • 1.2 Explain the outcome of the tensile test as well as any other phenomena observed during a tension test.
  • 1.3 Convert the load extension graph into a stress strain graph and determine relevant strength and stiffness parameters.
Determine properties of engineering materials established from shear, hardness or impact tests.
  • 2.1 Create a shear test to industry standards to establish ultimate shear strength of a material.
  • 2.2 Explain the outcome of the shear test as well as any other phenomena observed during the test.
  • 2.3 Create a hardness test to industry standards on a range of materials to rank them in order of hardness.
  • 2.4 Explain the outcome of the hardness tests as well as any other phenomena observed during the tests.
  • 2.5 Create an impact test to industry standards on a range of materials to rank them in order of ductility.
  • 2.6 Explain the outcome of the impact tests as well as any other phenomena observed during the tests.
Determine the properties of concrete in the plastic and solid states.
  • 3.1 Create a slump test to industry standards on a sample of concrete in the plastic state in order to determine its workability.
  • 3.2 Explain the outcome of the slump test as well as any other phenomena observed during the test.
  • 3.3 Create a compression test to industry standards on a sample of hardened concrete in order to determine its characteristic compressive strength.
  • 3.4 Explain the outcome of the compression test as well as any other phenomena observed during the test.
Determine the properties required to grade a piece of timber.
  • 4.1 Create a flexural test on samples of timber to stress grade the samples.
  • 4.2 Explain the outcome of the flexural tests as well as any other phenomena observed during the test.
Determine the properties of bitumen relevant for facilitating placement.
  • 5.1 Describe common tests used in industry to determine the suitability of a bitumen for use in pavements.
Outline NDT techniques used in materials.
  • 6.1 Identify and describe typical processes of common non destructive tests (NDT) used to locate flaws in materials.
  • 6.2 Outline the advantages and disadvantages of NDT techniques
