Description
To develop the learner’s skills and knowledge in the physical properties of
solids, liquids and gases in such a way that these:

- can be applied successfully to real life and industry situations
- support subsequent modules in the learner’s course of study.

The module places a strong emphasis on developing measurement skills, and
critical evaluation of both measurement technique and the data collected.

In addition, the module promotes good laboratory practice and technical
communication skills.
Range of Variables
This module is designed to be delivered off-the-job.

For full-time learners, the module hours should be ideally sequenced over a
semester period to ensure adequate time for skill acquisition and intermodule
reinforcement. Where delivery is via block release, a nine week period is
considered to be a minimum.

Learners should anticipate up to three additional hours study per week to cover
assignments, write ups and general revision.

The strategies used to deliver this module should encourage the development of
self-direction in learners. One way of achieving this is to adopt a
problem-solving investigative approach, based on examples from real life,
hypothetical situations, video material, computer simulations, and simulated
workplace tasks involving properties of materials. Wherever possible, learning
should be experiential.

An excellent model of use in developing experiential learning ac
