To provide students with:
- a general knowledge of commonly used geological laboratory
techniques.
- sufficient theoretical knowledge to apply with techniques
with efficiency, and in a safe manner.
- practice in using the techniques.
- the ability to obtain and record data from the techniques.
- an awareness of techniques, additional to those directly
observed, that are currently used in laboratories.
- a general knowledge of commonly used geological laboratory
techniques.

Internal Assessment 60%
Examination 40%
A pass in BOTH components is required.
Internal Assessment
Assignments 30%
Assignments will be set to cover the techniques and
instrumentation, used and viewed by the class.
There should be five or six assignments. The mark
credited to each assignment, will reflect the level
of difficulty of the assignment, and the time
required to complete it.
Projects 10%
Students will prepare projects, such as sand-sizing
chart, thin section, reference slides, seived sand
fractions, heavy media fractions during the
semester, and present them prior to the examination.
Folio 20%
All exercises done by the student during the
semester, will be collated in a folio, which is
presented just before the examination.
Examination
One two-hour examination, consisting of five questions, of which four must be
answered.
