Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify protocols to begin working with Aboriginal communities, cultural information and cultural material.

It requires the ability to identify protocols to consult with community, individuals and with the traditional custodians of cultural knowledge and cultural materials.

This unit applies to people who want to work with Aboriginal communities or to access cultural knowledge or cultural materials.

This unit recognises that there is no single Aboriginal Culture and that Aboriginal individuals and communities are diverse. Protocols must therefore be identified according to the local context.

In this unit the term Aboriginal is used in keeping with the current policy of the NSW Government and the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Incorporated. Indigenous Australians is the collective term used by the Commonwealth Government to refer to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people. Educators need to confirm what terminology is accepted by local communities and must demonstrate sensitivity to Aboriginal issues and cultures.

Aboriginality is a requirement for trainers who deliver this unit because the cultural knowledge required will only be known to Aboriginal people.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
