To introduce students to income maintenance
provisions within Australia.

To equip students with a working knowledge of income
maintenance provisions of the Federal Government,
e.g. Departments of Social Security; Veterans'
Affairs; Employment, Education and Training.

To allow students to identify issues associated with
claiming, and continuing provision of the various
income maintenance payments.

To provide students with skills in negotiating
problems associated with the rejection, suspension,
cancellation or variation of payments - including
appeals.

To give students an understanding of the relationship between income
maintenance and emergency relief provision.

Internal Assessment 100%

Tests 20% each

Students will undertake two short tests in class,
based on calculation of various payments,
particularly those of the Department of Social
Security.

Case Study 30% each

Students are required to describe the role of the
Welfare Worker at each level of the DSS Appeals
process, using information provided in a case study.

Students must prepare a submission to the Social
Security Appeals Tribunal based on the above case
study.
