Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide the physical and structural environment that enables and supports a person living with dementia. It involves identifying and responding to inhibitive environments and contributing to the design of an enabling environment.

The unit applies to workers in a residential or community setting, including family home, business and home / personal environments.

Elements and Performance Criteria
Undertake environmental audits
  • 1.1 Determine community and residential environments that may impact the person living with dementia
  • 1.2 Conduct a review of the individual’s community and residential environments to determine immediate and potential impacts
  • 1.3 Conduct a risk assessment for each environment, using an environmental assessment tool specific to the needs and abilities of people living with dementia
  • 1.4 Document and submit audit results in accordance with organisational requirements
Apply dementia design principles
  • 2.1 Review evidence-based design principles for people living with dementia
  • 2.2 Determine the needs and abilities of the person living with dementia in relation to their environments, in accordance with organisational policies and procedures
  • 2.3 Determine the improvements required for the environments to meet the needs and abilities of people living with dementia, in consultation with all key stakeholders
  • 2.4 Create enabling environmental designs which meet the dementia design principles for the environments selected
  • 2.5 Review designs to determine any residual risks and complete a basic risk assessment with control measures required to mitigate remaining risks
  • 2.6 Provide completed enabling environmental designs to stakeholders for review and feedback
  • 2.7 Document the amendments to the enabling environmental designs based on feedback
Develop an action plan
  • 3.1 Prepare an action plan in consultation with stakeholders, to implement enabling environmental designs, for each environment reviewed
  • 3.2 Document the risks in the environments that impact the person living with dementia
  • 3.3 Document the actions that are required to achieve modification and adaptations to the environments, to overcome these risks
  • 3.4 Record resources, responsibilities, and timeframes required for each action
  • 3.5 Document safety requirements in the plan
  • 3.6 Review action plan to determine any residual risks and complete a basic risk assessment with control measures required to mitigate risks determined
  • 3.7 Provide the action plan to the stakeholders involved in the implementation of the changes to the environment for review
