To provide learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to design an
underground piped drainage system for a small urban development using a
simplified procedure based on the principles outlined in the Institution of
Engineers (Australia) publication “Australian Rainfall and Runoff” 1987 and
design a minor culvert for a rural road based on procedures outlined in
VicRoads “Road Design Manual” Chapter Six.

Range of Variables
For consolidation, the material in this unit should be linked with, and be
complemented by, relevant on-the-job skill practice or other equivalent
experience, eg. extended subject time offered by a college on a weekly basis.
This module contains learning outcomes that require theory instruction under
standard classroom conditions and access to a computer laboratory with
appropriate software. The theory component will be assessed at the end of the
instructional period when learners are required to sit for a closed book theory
test, and also by project work throughout the module.
