To identify groups who have minority status, and
explore their situation and their experiences as
members of a minority group.
To examine legislation, and debate issues, relating
to Human Rights and Equal Opportunity.
To enable students to examine their own attitudes
towards human rights and minority groups.
To analyse and review societal attitudes towards
minority groups, by examining media reports.
To identify services available to members of
minority groups, and to discuss access issues, e.g.
education, law, welfare and health services.

Students to choose an article or report from the
media about one of the minority groups being studied
in this unit. They are then required to write a
100-150 word summary which describes the article,
comments on the effect the article might have,
evaluates the tone of article, and appraises the
article's ability to inform and educate. The
summary must be presented to the class for
discussion.
Seminar Presentation - 15 minutes 30%
Students to choose from listed topics, and present a
tutorial on that topic to the class.
Seminar Report 20%
Students to evaluate class response to the
presentation, and rate their own performance
(300-500 words).
Examination 30%
Students to choose three questions from five
examination questions, and answer in essay form.
(Duration: two hours.)
