Description
To provide participants with knowledge of employment and industrial issues as they affect women, and the skills and attitudes needed to be effective community advocates by providing support and empowering women disadvantaged by the legal system.
Range of Variables
This unit is intended to prepare participants for direct services delivery. The emphasis is on practical and experiential learning. Lecturers should preferably be experienced as community advocates and be able to draw on personal experience and case material in order to demonstrate the use of advocacy skills and knowledge. Lecturers must provide up-to-date information on the legislation and therefore must be prepared to research and ensure they include any changes which may be of relevance to this curriculum.

Students should be warned against giving advice on legal matters and a strong distinction needs to be drawn between role of support worker and the role of a lawyer or accountant. There should be a strong emphasis on client empowerment.

The emphasis should be on client choice and providing information and support.

In line with the above point, the normal method of teaching and learning should be using role-play and case study analysis. Ideally,
