Description
To define the structure and function of the family
in Australian society, and to analyse the impact of
socialisation which groups individuals into
families.

To recognise the changing roles within families, and examine the effect of
family breakdown and separation on family members.

To calculate the extent of domestic violence,
examine the damage done to women and children, and
to develop practical skills and principles for
action.

To review the concept of childhood, and discuss the issues of child abuse and
incest, and develop practical skills for intervention.

To analyse the impact of poverty in families, and
examine the needs and resources available to single
parents, youth and the aged in families.

Internal Assessment

A presentation of a topic chosen from the lecture
series. Students will research the topic, present their research, enable
questions and discussion, and summarise topic
clearly. 30%

Topic Summary 30%

Students will distribute to class members a 1-2 page
summary of their presentation.

Examination 40%

One two-hour written paper. Students must answer
four questions in essay form.
