Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for culturally appropriate, unscripted, and largely spontaneous, routine verbal communication in workplace settings in a language other than English.

“Routine” in this unit refers to communication in a range of familiar and some unfamiliar workplace contexts.

It involves working independently and using familiar support resources. The communication may involve:
- Dialogue with customers, clients and colleagues.
- Work-related interaction, in person or by telephone.
- Requesting and providing work-related services.
- Responding to work-related enquiries/requests.
- Participating in meetings and seminars.

Communication will involve the use of culturally appropriate expressions and interpersonal dialogue in both informal and formal social settings.

“Culturally appropriate” refers to verbal and non-verbal communication that is sensitive to cultural difference and avoids misunderstanding or offence.

The outcomes described in this unit relate to:
- the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) descriptors at levels A2 - B1 (Basic User)
- the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) at level 2+/3 (Able to perform effectively in a range of informal and formal situations and in situations which are not linguistically demanding in own vocational fields)

No occupational licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
