Description
To provide learners with a knowledge of the components of the immune system and
their function. Learners will be able to apply this knowledge in understanding:

- the need for assays that monitor, identify and measure these components
- the rationale behind the design of immunological assays
- the ways in which antibodies can be produced in vido and for industry.
Range of Variables
This module has been designed for off-the-job delivery and expects reasonable
access to equipment that allows for the simulation of conditions in a small
scale diagnostic immunology laboratory. Where suitable arrangements can be
made, on the job delivery of the module or part of the module is appropriate
provided the core activities suggested at the end of each learning outcome are
covered by all centres.

The module content is best scheduled over a semester period. Block release for
practical sessions is appropriate if on-the-job delivery forces more limited
access to facilities.

The learner can anticipate 3-4 hours extra participation in their own time per
week based on full semester delivery of both theory, demonstrations and
practical work.
