Description
This course is designed to develop speed of note-
taking using a symbolic (Pitman 2000, New Era and
Gregg) or derived script (Pitmanscript and Teeline)
and the transcription from shorthand notes taken
from verbatim dictation, within a specified time at
a minimum standard of 98% accuracy.
On completion of this course students shall be able
to:
- Write Shorthand using the correct rules and principles and appropriate
phrasing and shortening devices to record dictation at speeds of 60, 70, 90,
110, 120, 130 or 140 wpm.
- Write Shorthand from 'unseen' continuous verbatim
dictation of general business and commercial matter for a period of four
minutes at a speed of 60, 70, 90, 110, or 120, and five minutes at 130 or 140
wpm.
- Transcribe, without assistance, the shorthand notes taken
in manuscript or typewritten form within a maximum time allowance:

The student is pre-tested in classroom/workshop and
is required to pass TWO assessment tests.
The student is then eligible to attempt an official
test from the AS Shorthand Speeds:
60 wpm, or
70 wpm, or
90 wpm, or
110 wpm, or
120 wpm, or
130 wpm, or
140 wpm
The test is to be selected at random from the bank
of Shorthand speed tests.
The assessment must take place under officially
controlled laboratory conditions or similarly
approved conditions. To successfully achieve a pass
in Shorthand Speed 60, 70, 90, 110, 120, 130 or 140
wpm, the student must pass ONE test paper as set out
below.
