Description
To provide students with understanding and skills
relating to histological techniques, so that they:
- understand the basic principles of microscopy, and are
able to use a microscope correctly.
- can identify certain tissue types, both plant and animal.
- understand the basic principles of tissue preparation, and
are able to carry out these techniques.
- can prepare a range of commonly used staining and
impregnation techniques used in histology.
- can prepare tissue for transmission electron microscopy.

A pass in BOTH components is required.
Internal Assessment
Presentation of a folio, which should include:
- the best stained section of each method studied, and the
best H&E slide of each tissue used (at least five different animal tissues
should be used). These will be marked, according to stain quality and
presentation of slides.
- a brief histological description of each stained slide presented, and
any relevant theory related to the method. Analysis of the slide should
mention faults and possible causes, and an explanation of any artefacts.
- a photomicrograph of the best stained sections, to show an
area representative of the tissue type, and the stain used. This should be
presented with the appropriate histological description (Section 2).
Examination 40%
