Description
To develop students' confidence to enable them to become familiar with the vocabulary, terms and procedures of basic maths. The context will be everyday situations, both personal and in the workplace in order to raise the awareness of the relevance of mathematics in practice. The range of material, resources and processes should accommodate varying levels of ability, experience and prior knowledge.
To address the sociological influences affecting students in relation to mathematics.
The assessment criteria describes minimum competencies, but the intent of the module is to develop a confident and positive approach to maths and the full extension of each student.
At the end of the module learners should be able to attempt problem solving involving the four processes with confidence and be able to select the best method for themselves. They should feel comfortable with straightforward calculations using pen and paper, a calculator or in-the-head methods.
Learners should also be able to apply personal financial planning processes.

Solve mathematical problems set in written text by:
selecting the appropriate process, clarifying the mathematical meaning, communicating strategies with other students, use oral and written formal and informal language to solve the mathematical problems.
Assessment Method:
Informal methods including recording of teacher observations.
Anecdotal records.
Written solutions and completed worksheets.
Oral explanations.
Group problem solving.
Maintenance of file with sample work and records of teacher's observations as evidence of demonstrations of competency.
Note: If student's work demonstrates competencies beyond those described in the assessment criteria, samples should be collected to assist articulation into other courses.
