Description
To teach the hardware configuration of a computer
system in terms of functional components and their
interaction, and to survey the typical and general
quantitative aspects (capacities, speed and
performance) of the main hardware components.
To detail the forms of data representation and their
storage in the binary digital form.
To identify the major classes of software and relate
each to the respective type(s) of user, and to
document characteristic features of these
distinctive classes of software.
To develop a comprehensive glossary of all terms and
definitions.

Students must pass the written paper.
Where a pass is achieved in the written paper, the
overall mark is the sum of the two components,
weighted as shown above.
Otherwise, the overall mark is determined by 100%
weighting for the written paper.
Internal Assessment
- Full development of an application.
- Analysis of all characters stored in an ASCII file.
Examination
One two-hour examination consisting of ten single or multi-part questions
focussing on the following topics:
- Types of software.
- Number systems and simple conversion.
- Knowledge of standard peripherals.
- Magnetic/laser storage media.
- Components of computer hardware.
- Functions of selected hardware components.
- Storage of user data in memory.
- Evaluation of software environments.
Examination 70%
Students must pass the written paper.
