To develop understanding of the styles of music,
selected for practical studies, in their social and
historical context.
To provide the student with opportunities to become
familiar with the major artists who have contributed
to the styles of music selected for practical
studies and with some of their repertoires.
To encourage the student to broaden his/her
knowledge by listening to recorded or live music.
To encourage students to contribute to discussion
and provide an opportunity for students to speak to
an audience.

Participation includes punctuality, thoughtful
contributions to class discussion, asking pertinent
questions and listening skills.
Attendance. 5%
Oral assessment. 40%
Two class presentations of 15 minutes' duration,
with recordings and/or live examples on a relevant
subject chosen by the student in consultation with
the tutor (20% for each presentation).
Written assessment. 40%
1,000-word essay.
Students need to achieve a pass in the written
assignment and at least one of the oral assignments.
