To instil in the students the importance of the
techniques, in theory and in practice of Marine
Safety.
To reinforce the concept of prevention and avoidance procedures, the concept of
organisation and training as a basis to Marine Safety.

Assessment will be based on students ability to state the importance of each of
the following points and to further appreciate the need to fully understand the
implications of each as a general guide to survival, for example:
- where your life jacket is stowed and to ensure that it is
always ready to put on
- how to put your life jacket on correctly and how to
operate the light
- the location of all life saving craft on his vessel and
how to launch such craft
- knowing his assigned fire duties and what they entail
- knowing the routes by which to escape from working and
accommodation areas to his emergency station and survival craft
- familiarity with all emergency and abandon ship signals
- general boat handling and terminology
- demonstrate CPR and first aid methods
