Description
To teach the functions and
configurations of the major hardware
components.

To teach the concepts relating to the operating system as a resource manager.

Students must pass the examination.

Where a pass is achieved in the
examination, the overall mark is the
sum of the two components, weighted as
shown above. Otherwise, the overall
mark is determined by 100% weighting
for the written paper.

Examination

One two hour written paper consisting of fifteen questions relating to the
following topics:

- Hardware Components 15%
- Interrupt Mechanisms 10%
- Operating System Functions 10%
- Non-Virtual Memory Management 10%
- Processor Management 5%
- Information Management 25%
- Device Management 5%
- User Interface 20%

Internal Assessment

- Short tests relating to hardware concepts and operating
system theory. 15%

- Practical exercises relating to the user interface of one
microcomputer operating system and one mainframe operating
system. 15%
