Description
To enable learners to operate in an actual workplace environment by undertaking
two projects relating to specific Human Resource Development issues of the
learners choice, thereby benefiting both the learner and the organisation.
General notes
Range of Variables
This module is based on a learning contract arrangement. Learners identify
specific Human Resource Development issues for which they wish to undertake a
project in their organisation or in another organisation of their choosing.

Learners decide on the focus and objective of their research, the resources
required to conduct the research and the criteria on which they require the
project to be assessed by the TAFE tutor.

The project is then negotiated with the TAFE tutor who ensures that the project
has sufficient substance to meet the demands of a 34 hour unit and that the
evaluation criteria are established at an acceptable level. Both the learner
and the tutor then sign the learning contract as acceptance of the project.

Formal contact hours on campus at TAFE are restricted to learner/teacher
meetings only, usually to establish the contract or to monitor progress
throughout the course.
Evidence Guide
Internal Assessment 100%

Project to be assessed by TAFE tutor.

The teacher typically provides the learner with learning contract forms
(attached) during an initial meeting at the beginning of the semester.
Learners select two projects to undertake within a particular organisation and
complete the contract form.

Learners then arrange a second meeting with the teacher to negotiate the
contracts and for the teacher to validate that the contracts contain an
appropriate level of rigour for two 17 hour projects. Teachers should also
ensure that all ethical issues and management approval from the relevant
organisation have been attended to.

On acceptance of the contracts both the teacher and the learner sign the form.
The contracts then become the learners formal and binding criteria for
completion of the unit unless they are re-negotiated at some stage prior to the
learning contracts becoming due.

Further meetings between the teacher and the learner are implemented at either
the teacher or learner’s request as part of an ongoing monitoring process to
ensure that learners are moving towards the stated objectives. Teachers are
encouraged to provide support and direction where this is requested or
perceived to be required.

Typical examples of relevant HRD Projects for this unit might include:

- Designing a course or HRD program
- Evaluation of some aspect of the HRD function
- Analysing and reporting on some HRD related organisational issue
- Conducting needs assessment
- Designing instructional technology
- Designing computer based learning programs
- Designing distance education programs
- Designing open learning programs
- Gauging trainee reactions to a program
- Cost benefit analyses
- Developing strategic plans for HRD
- Designing audio or video programs
- Conducting job analyses
- Developing a career guidance system

(these are just suggestions and the possibilities are much wider)

Learners should be encouraged to undertake projects that will benefit the
organisation in which they are undertaking a project.
