Description
To give students a working understanding of Australian anti-discrimination legislation as it relates to women. To explore methods of ensuring women's rights are upheld under this legislation.
Range of Variables
This unit is intended to prepare participants for direct service delivery. The emphasis is on practical and experiential learning. Lecturer should preferably be experienced as community advocates and be able to draw on personal experience and case material in order to demonstrate the use of community advocacy skills and knowledge. Lecturers must provide up-to-date information on the legislation and therefore must be prepared to research and ensure they include any changes which may be of relevance to this curriculum.
Students should be warned against giving advice on legal matters and a strong distinction needs to be drawn between the role of a support worker and the role of a lawyer or accountant.
The emphasis should be on client choice and providing information and support.
