Description
To improve the skills and confidence of young women in communicating in a variety of formal and informal situations. To consider roles within a group and ways to develop teamwork. To improve knowledge of non-verbal and verbal communication skills. To practice standard written communication forms.

To apply interpersonal skills and distinguish between passive, assertive and aggressive behaviour and use assertive strategies. To clarify rights and responsibilities and apply conflict resolution strategies.

STAFF REQUIREMENTS

Staff teaching in this area require subject expertise and experience in facilitating groups. The issues raised in this subject area require sensitivity and skill to address. It is helpful to start with case studies prior to enacting role plays. It is better to enact typical scenes initially rather than personal events. Trust must be developed in the group prior to any role play work.

Staff working with young students require:

Positive regard and empathy for young people and their issues.
Enthusiasm and creativity in designing learning activities.
Ability to facilitate adult learning at an appropriate level for the group.
Flexibility and commitment to listen and respond to students' needs.
