Description
To develop the learner's understanding of the impact of disability on the
family, in order to enhance their ability to work with families of people with
disabilities.

Range of Variables
This module is intended to be delivered in a group learning context, due to the
complex and sensitive nature of the material.
Facilitators must have knowledge of the grieving process/family systems theory;
experience working with families of people with disabilities, and excellent
interpersonal and counselling skills.
Some of the material presented in this module is very powerful (particularly
the grieving response and family systems). Therefore facilitators must be
sensitive to the learners needs, debriefing when necessary.
This module is intended to prepare learners for their work with families in a
variety of settings.
The delivery of this module must be presented to enhance the development of a
non-judgmental attitude towards family members.
The material needs to be delivered in a practical way. Videos and case studies
will be used to base the material in reality. However, it is
