Suggested Practical Tasks

A range of practical exercises should be given which
will enable students to successfully complete the
following tasks:

1 Establish a regular grid of levels in undulating terrain, book and
reduce levels by the collimation method, and interpolate contours.

2 Conduct a combined longitudinal and cross- section traverse.

3 Determine the area of a portion of land defined by irregular
boundaries, using the Simpson's or Trapezoidal formula.

4 Establish a regular grid of levels in undulating terrain, book and
reduce levels by the Collimation method, and use the levels

5 Determine Longitudinal and Cross-Section levels (e.g. for road
construction) and compute cut/fill volumes).

6 Carry out a detail "pick-up" survey, using theodolite and EDM to
determine position and RL.

7 Clearly and unambiguously record all observations pertaining to the
above in a suitable field book.
