Description
To enhance participants' understanding of what an effective advocate and support person is, and to develop specific skills so that they are better able to assist clients in gaining access to the justice system, including

* Identify the roles and limitations
involved in providing support for clients
accessing justice.

* Apply the empowerment model of support
work throughout the process of assisting
and supporting clients.

* Demonstrate rapport and supportive
communication skills with clients.

* Utilise a range of appropriate methods of
advocacy work in accessing justice and
services for clients.

* Clarify clients' legal issues, needs and
preferred outcomes.

* Implement and maintain strategies that
achieve the best possible outcomes for
clients.

* Mobilise relevant information, resources,
support and services that may assist
clients in accessing justice and improving
their quality of life.

* Liaise with legal professionals and
government workers in ways that render
useful assistance for clients.

* Identify a network of working
relationships with individuals from
relevant agencies and services.

* Identify a range of cross-cultural
communication issues and demonstrate how
these may apply in an interview situation
Range of Variables
* This unit is intended to prepare
participants for direct service delivery.
The emphasis is on practical and
experiential learning. Lecturers should
preferably be experienced as community
advocates and be able to draw on personal
experience and case material in order to
demonstrate the use of community advocacy
skills and knowledge. Lecturers must
provide up-to-date information on the
legislation and therefore must be prepared
to research and ensure they include any
changes which may be of relevance to this
curriculum.

* Students should be warned against giving
advice on legal matters and a strong
distinction needs to be drawn between the
role of a support worker and the role of a
lawyer or accountant.
