Description
To provide the learner with practical training in the care of small laboratory
animals.

Range of Variables
This module involves work in an animal house. Delivery will be on-the-job and
skills may be assessed by independent assessors or employers.
Learners are required to complete at least 216 hours work in an Animal House.
This may be completed as a portion of full-time or part-time employment, or as
unpaid work experience. Work experience may be done at one or more animal
facilities.
Lecturer supervision of 34 hours includes visits to the learner’s workplace to
assist employers with instructing and assessing learners.
Occupation Health and Safety
It is expected that Occupational Health and Safety procedures will be
implemented at all times and that learners will be alerted to the specific
safety requirements related to this module.
Training staff and assessors for this module and workplace skills assessment
must have relevant industry experience.

A workbook is to be completed by the learner and signed by the
technician-in-charge (or supervisor) of the animal house.
As many animal houses specialise in various aspects of animal technology it is
understood that learners may not be able to complete all the tasks listed,
therefore to gain a pass, learners are required to satisfactorily complete a
minimum of 80% of the nominated tasks.
