Description
This unit is the first of a two part
programme to develop knowledge and
skills in initial counselling processes
for people engaged as direct care
workers in the human services area. It
will clarify the role of a counsellor/
helper as a para professional and
develop both understanding of the
counselling process and theoretical
models of counselling/helping. There
will be an emphasis on developing
self-understanding as an individual
helper and practising initial
counselling skills through micro
counselling and role playing.

lecturer. Students will be expected to participate in discussions of

Micro-counselling situations will be
established for
students to practice specific skills.

Each student will write an essay
demonstrating his/her
understanding of traits and abilities
which will influence
