To be delivered by lecturers who have extensive experience working in the Human
Services Industry, preferably at a management level, and who possess a tertiary
qualification of Associate Diploma/Diploma or higher.

The module is taught within the framework of adult teaching and learning
methods emphasising:
- the utilisation of lived experience of learners
- the encouragement of self directed learning
- flexible delivery to meet the needs of learners
- active participation in class to ensure the exchange of skills and
ideas.

Internal Assessment 100%

Assessment will occur throughout the duration of the module and will be based
on:
- Active participation in class discussions, debates and activities in a
manner that is conducive to the full participation of all learners and is
respectful of all learners, and
- The completion of a major, local community work project. This project
will address Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3 & 4.

COMMUNITY WORK PROJECT

Part A
A community work project is to be completed by learners in small groups,
preferably of four. Learners select an issue affecting a particular local
community and, in negotiation with the Lecturer and in consultation with
players in the local community, prepare a 1000 word project plan to include:
- aims and objectives
- the interests being served by the project
- the role of the learners involved
- how principles of community work will be applied
- community development theories
- techniques, strategies and methods to be utilised
- a time frame including the allocation of responsibilities across the
group
- evaluation methods to be used
- description of players, contacts and networks in the community
- analysis of power relationships
- scenarios in which involvement may require termination.

Part B
Fortnightly oral reports to be provided by each group including:
- community development methods, processes, strategies and techniques
applied in the fortnight period
- participants in the project to date and associated issues
- report on time line and planning progress.

Part C
On completion of the project, learners to submit an individual 1500 word report
covering:
- a description of the project and processes used
- achievement against stated aims and objectives
- critical reflection on the process of undertaking the project
including evaluation and analysis of successes, failures and limitations of the
project
- an analysis of issues of power structures, control issues and any
manipulation that occurred during the project.
Learners will present a condensed version of their paper to the class, in their
project groups, for a presentation period of 20 minutes.

Performance is expected across a range of contexts in which social and
political inequality occurs as a condition of the emergence of community
development (including but not limited to class, gender, ethnicity, ability,
sexuality, age and geographic location, however assessment will not occur in
all contexts). Learners to work in small groups, preferably of four.
