Description
To provide learners with the necessary contextual knowledge and skills to
interpret competently at para-professional level (formerly NAATI Level 2) in
Australia. The module emphasises that competent interpreting performance at
this level requires detailed understanding of the Australian contexts within
which interpreting occurs.
The module also emphasises that interpreters need to competently integrate
bi-cultural aspects in the communication process and hence covers practice in
development of this skill in realistic settings. To successfully complete this
module learners must demonstrate a clear understanding of the contexts in which
interpreting occurs and effectively employ cross-cultural communication skills.

General notes
Range of Variables
To assist learners consolidate previous experience with new knowledge and
skills, teaching strategies should emphasise experiential learning.
A wide range of instructional modes should be used whenever practicable. These
include classroom based lectures and tutorials, simulation exercises and
role-plays, workshops and guest expert speakers. A range of flexible delivery
mode techniques including teleconferencing, print-based resources in the form
of learning guides and interactive video are appropriate for this module.
Some areas of content are common to more than one learning outcome. These
should be integrated throughout the module.
Ideally, both English and the relevant LOTE should be the languages of
instruction for this module to better meet the purpose of cross-cultural
comparisons of contextual topics.
