Description
To extend the students' understanding and skills in
effective evaluation of human services delivery.
To provide students with practical experience in the
area. The emphasis is on data collection and analysis.
Students who have successfully completed this
subject should have demonstrated that they:
- understand basic principles, techniques and measurement
tools in setting up an evaluative study
- can outline a proposed evaluative study
- can carry out a pilot study which is a follow- up to the
proposed outline
- can make recommendations on the basis of the pilot study
findings
- can compile a written report suitable for presenting to
those concerned with the service delivery.

An essential requirement is that a student gain a
50% pass in each of 14.1, 14.2, 14.3 and 14.4.
The following criteria must be met in each of these
areas:
Written Evaluative Report
Presentation:
Clearly set out and indexed. Numbered pages. Clearly written or typed on one
side of paper only. Presented in a spring-clip folder with side tabs to the
relevant sections.
Content to include:
- Rationale for the study
- Brief review of literature relating to the rationale
- Statement of aims in measurable terms
- Brief description of the population sampled: how, when and
why
- Outline of method of data collection
- Table of results
- Analysis of results
- Discussion of results
- Conclusions and recommendations
- Acknowledgements
- References correctly listed on final page.
Fieldwork
Student to gain signed permission from relevant authorities to carry out
observations and recording at agreed upon times.
Student to draw up practical checksheets for
recording that is appropriate to the nature of the
observations and recording indicated in the proposed
study.
Student to be able to present tabled data and discuss with class.
Practical Work Folio
- to be kept in a manilla folder
- to be signed and dated
- rough work ideas and jottings to be available to lecturer
and to be verbally discussed with lecturer.
Presentation of Report to Class
Student to use whiteboard or overhead projections.
To discuss study and its outcome with class. A
brief verbal summary of aims, methods and possible
further modifications.
CREDIT will be gained for meeting all the stated
essential requirements in each of 14.1, 14.2, 14.3
and 14.4 plus more than meeting the requirements in
any two of 14.1, 14.2, 14.3 and 14.4.
A credit will be 65-74%.
Distinction will be gained for outstanding work in
each of 14.1, 14.2, 14.3 and 14.4.
A distinction will be 75+%.
A supplementary exam will not be available.
