Description
To raise the confidence levels of students in handling modern technology and equipment, including computers, photocopiers, facsimile machines and telephone networks.

To broaden horizons and aspirations of students in relation to non-traditional, technological and vocational areas.

To provide experience using several software packages.

To apply occupational health and safety practices when handling new technology/equipment.

To identify the social implications of technology.

To provide flexibility for exploring other technical areas.
Range of Variables
This module will be delivered in an appropriately equipped classroom/laboratory/workshop. Where appropriate, some competencies may be developed in a workplace setting.

Arrangements may be made for some aspects of equipment operation to be demonstrated during student's work observation or work experience. This must be clearly negotiated with the workplace and monitored.

Wherever possible, students will work at their own pace and be encouraged to assist each other as appropriate.

RESOURCES

Written/pictorial reference materials must be provided, especially for computer operations.

Staff require experience working with women and access groups at widely differing entry levels of competence.

Access to up to date computer equipment and software packages; facsimile machine, photocopier with collating facility, network telephone system, etc.

ASSESSMENT METHOD:

Observation checklists, short oral and written assignments and practical demonstration.

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS:

Operation of office equipment and e-mail may be assessed in conjunction with work observation.

Use of the word processing package may be combined with assessment activities for other modules, eg, short reports, letters, etc.

Use of the speadsheet package may be combined with assessment activities for other modules.
