Description
To provide the student with an understanding of the
instruments, procedures and computations appropriate
to the determination of relative position and
preparation of survey plans. The subject will
provide the student with the means to progress to
Surveying 1D.

Suggested Practical Tasks

A range of practical exercises should be given which
will enable students to successfully complete the
following tasks:

1 Conduct a level traverse comprising backsight, intermediate and
foresight readings between two independent bench marks. The traverse should
incorporate inverted staff readings, be booked and reduced by the Rise-and-Fall
technique, and adjusted to distribute misclose.

2 Test an automatic level for collimation error.

3 Measure distances using a standard steel band and apply the
appropriate slope, sag, and temperature corrections to obtain a horizontal
distance.

4 Observe slope distances using EDM equipment and reduce to

5 Measure a horizontal angle by the 4-fold repetition method.

6 Measure a vertical angle as the mean of Face Left and Face Right
readings.

7 Combine theodolite and EDM equipment to survey a small closed traverse
to a precision of better than 1:8000.

8 Clearly and unambiguously, record all observations pertaining to the
above in a suitable field book.
