Description
To identify and appraise accident and loss producing
conditions and practices.

To appreciate the severity of the accident problem
and to evaluate the consequences of accidents.

To develop simpler accident prevention and loss
control techniques in relation to engineering
aspects.

Specific Aims:

To enable the student:

- to analyse accident statistics, to identify accident
trends, to appreciate the outcome of accidents and the importance of community
and management attitudes.

- to evaluate the need for and nature of accident
prevention, and to be able to indicate that accident/injury prevention is being
approached as a "science and a 'multi-disciplinary' body of knowledge".

- to develop the methodology of accident prevention
applicable to specific areas of industrial safety activity, and simultaneously
to gain technical knowledge of those areas.

- to apply the techniques of accident prevention to specific
areas of industrial safety activity.

- to select, appraise and apply appropriate personal
protective equipment and to indicate the problems of motivation for use and
acceptance of the equipment.

- to apply the techniques necessary to measure and evaluate
financial and other losses.
