To introduce students to text databases (excluding library catalogues) and to
enable them to develop the skills required for the design, development and
maintenance of those databases, using INMAGIC software.

Internal Assessment 100%
Continuous assessment (Students will require access to a College computer to do
their assignments). This will comprise:
1 Test on Database Concepts (Topics 1, 2 & 3) 20%
2 Learning INMAGIC : Computer Laboratory assignments:
1 x Data Structure 5%
1 x Data Entry and Quality Control 5%
3 Design a small database, enter records and produce appropriate
outputs (Minor Assignment) 10%
4 Design a database, enter records, design outputs and an in-house
systems manual (Major Assignment) 60%
Students will be required to design a text database
using INMAGIC, enter data into it, develop quality
controls, and design output formats. The assignment
will take the form of a Manual for this
database. The development work will mainly be undertaken in class under
supervision, but in part in the students' own time. The Manuals should
demonstrate the students' ability:
a to apply the information and skills learnt in this subject to a
practical situation;
b to present the structure and usage of their database clearly and
succinctly to others.
c Preparation of User Information Retrieval Guide.
A pass will not be granted in this unit unless the
student has achieved a minimum of 40 marks in the
In-house System Manual assignment.
