STANDARDS FOR PRACTICAL
OBJECTIVE

DETAILS OF REVISION AND EVALUATION OF REQUIREMENTS

Student progress in both theory and practical
objectives is to be regularly monitored throughout
the stage and appropriate remedial action taken as
necessary in accordance with college procedures.

Revision of theory objectives in all topics should
be carried out during final week before divisional
examination.

AIMS To detail the evaluation principles and methods by which students
enrolled in Automotive Mechanical App 3A are to be assessed.

HOURS REVISION

- Recommended eight hours of theory objectives during final
weeks of subject or progressive during stage, followed by one two-hour
divisional examination (examination time NOT included in subject time
allocation).

- Recommended eight hours of practical objectives during
final weeks of subject, or progressive during stage.

THEORY OBJECTIVES

The 'Level' coding applied to each theory objective
is intended as a guide to the relative importance of
the objectives.

Early remedial action will be necessary where
students are identified as failing to achieve all
objectives classified as 'Essential' and the
majority of those classified as 'Important'.

Whilst all students should be encouraged to achieve
objectives classified as 'Desirable', this should
not be to the detriment of the more important
objectives where students are considered to lack
academic abilities.

Assessment will be by means of a divisional
examination at the end of the stage, together with
college set and marked assignments throughout the
year.

- Divisional Examination

Examiners are advised to ensure that a majority
of the theory marks available are allocated to
questions assessing knowledge of theory
objectives classified as 'Essential' or
'Important'.

Sufficient questions assessing knowledge of 'Desirable' objectives must be
included, to ensure the abilities of students with high academic skills are
properly identified.

- Assignments

Colleges should develop assignments, suitable
to needs of their students and resources
available, which will achieve the following
aims:

o To reinforce understanding of theory objectives, or the theory
component of practical objectives, of Automotive Mechanical Stage 3A.

o To provide practice in finding and interpreting technical data
available in workshop manuals, specification sheets, microfiche and reference
books.

o To provide student practice in producing clear hand-written
communications. (Standards of writing, spelling and vocabulary should be not
less than typical workshop job cards presented to customers or parts
requisitions).

o It is recommended that Stage 3A students deliver a class lecturette on
a subject chosen by the student and agreed to by the lecturer. The purpose of
the lecturette is to give final year students the opportunity to plan,
research, prepare and present a subject of interest in the Automotive area of
study. This lecturette is presented in lieu of one written mechanical
assignment. The lecturette is not compulsory and students may decide to present
all three written assignments.

- Practical Objectives

It is recommended that students carry out the
listed practical objectives (P) to reinforce
the lesson material. The evaluation of student
performance with practical projects being a
guide to the effectiveness of the lesson
program.

The practical mark is to be an assessment of the students' attitude,
involvement and interest displayed in demonstration and practical sessions
throughout each stage of training and is to be expressed as a percentage.

(P) Has completed the task in a training
situation.

Assessment of objective to incorporate aspects of the apprentices:

o practical handskill development o application to task (as
reflected in the number of tasks completed) o correct use of equipment and
safe working practices.

One two-hour composite paper 100 marks

Consisting of:

Mechanical Theory
60 objective type questions - 1 mark each 60
marks
2 short-answer essays (choice from four) - 5 marks
each 10 marks

Electrical Theory
40 objective type questions - 0.5 marks each 20
marks
2 short-answer essays (choice from three) - 5 marks
each 10 marks

Assignments:

Three assignments are to be set on Stage 3A topics.

marks

A lecturette may be presented by a student, in lieu of one assignment.

CERTIFICATE OF TRADE STUDIES

To be eligible for this certificate, an apprentice
must reach a pass standard in the certificate % for
each stage.

The certificate percentage shall be calculated, by
the following formula:
