Description
To show learners how the physical and chemical properties of biologically
significant molecules relate to their function in living cells and how they can
be identified using qualitative tests. Learners will gain the necessary
knowledge to support subsequent vocationally oriented modules as well as a
grounding in good laboratory practice.
It is important to note that this module is the first of a sequence of three
modules: Biochemistry I, II and III.
In terms of knowledge and skills:
Biochemistry II builds on this module and covers the physical and chemical
properties of molecules that make up functional components of the body.
Practical skills focus on the selection and performance of appropriate
qualitative and quantitative assays.
Biochemistry III deals with the molecular biology of enzyme function and
regulation and compares anabolic and catabolic pathways in the cell. Practical
skills focus on the use of biological molecules as quantitative and qualitative
analytical reagents.

For full-time learners, the module hours should be ideally sequenced over a
semester period to ensure adequate time for acquisition of skills and
reinforcement between modules. Where delivery is via block release, a
nine-week period is considered to be minimum. Learners should anticipate an
additional three hours per week to adequately complete assignments, reports and
revision.
As this module has a significant laboratory component delivery strategies must
ensure integration of knowledge and laboratory skills. In adopting a
particular delivery strategy, it is important to establish the entry
characteristics (particularly employment status) of the learners. Part-time
learners may appreciate an initial practical focus on the properties of
