Description
This module will provide the learner with an opportunity to use skills obtained
in the first year of a Diploma of Applied Science or similar course of study.
As it may be the first experience in the workplace for the learner, the module
will also provide an opportunity for the learner to develop the skills
necessary for effective workplace participation. Learners are encouraged to
participate in and reflect on the culture of the workplace.

Range of Variables
While under some circumstances learners may negotiate their own placement, this
module does not set out to develop job seeking skills. It is assumed that the
placement will be negotiated between institution-based co-ordinators and
workplace contacts.
The nature of the workplace needs careful consideration.
When arranging a placement, there must be significant contact between
institution-based and workplace supervisors. When negotiating a suitable
workplace:
- the workplace must be relevant to the learner’s course of study
and/or future career goals
- there must be a high level of support and assistance available to the
learner in the workplace
- the workplace and institution-based supervisors must negotiate a
suitable work program with the learner
- the workplace must adhere to occupational health and safety guidelines
and equal opportunity principles
- the learner needs access
