Description
To develop an understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts, operations
and relationships.
To give the student an appreciation of the relevance of mathematics to a
variety of situations and disciplines, by emphasising the applications of
mathematical theory.
To develop an awareness that mathematics is an organised body of knowledge.
To develop in the students, confidence in their ability to use mathematics
effectively.
To develop in the student, the ability to communicate effectively in the

To pass in this subject, students must gain at least 40% in both the internal
assessment and examination component, as well as an aggregate mark of at
least 50%
Marks CANNOT be carried over to subsequent semesters, except in the case of a
deferred examination.

At least two tests 30%
At least three assignments 20%
Assignments and tests should be cumulative in nature. These should include
mostly knowledge and comprehension-
level questions, as well as some questions of an applied/problem-solving nature.
A test/assignment schedule could take the following form:
(NOTE: This is NOT prescriptive)
-Test 1: A one hour test on Topics 1-4 15 marks
-Test 2: A one hour test on Topics 1-7/8 15 marks
-Assignment 1: Covering Topics 1-3 5 marks
-Assignment 2: Covering Topics 1-5 5 marks
-Assignment 3: Covering Topics 1-7/8 10 marks

One two-hour examination on Topics 1-6.
