overall mark is the sum of the two components,
weighted as shown above.

Otherwise, the overall mark is determined by 100%
weighting for the written paper.

Examination

One two-hour written paper consisting of fifteen questions relating to the
following topics:

Local-Area Networks 20%
RS-232C Standard, Asynchronous Transmissions and
Modems 25% Flow Control, Errors and Error Control
10% Telecom Data Services and Phone System 15%
Communications Hardware 15% Communications
Software 15%

Internal Assessment Requirements (30%)

Exercises relating to the practical application of
communications software and hardware.

- Short exercises relating to the connection of printers to
PC's using a serial interface. 10%
- Short exercises relating to establishing remote
connections with intelligent modems, file transfers and terminal emulation. 20%
