Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop fundamental acting skills to be applied during performance for film and television. It requires the ability to analyse and apply theoretical concepts and skills in a range of screen production situations. Actors are expected to display a high level of motivation and responsibility for themselves and others during screen, television and film shoots.

The unit applies to screen performance actors in the performing arts industry.

Improvise creatively
  • 1.1 Perform roles with spontaneity, creativity, inventiveness and imagination in structured improvisations
  • 1.2 Contribute to an environment that is conducive to creativity and inventiveness
  • 1.3 Translate a performances authenticity into understandable behaviour for the purposes of visual story-telling

Explore character through given circumstances
  • 2.1 Identify and analyse factors and techniques on how the actor approaches various short scripts for film, plays and television
  • 2.2 Explore and realise the emotional, psychological and physical characterisation of the character
  • 2.3 Discuss character in literary texts applying Konstantin Stanislavski’s given circumstances principle
  • 2.4 Analyse and explore the given circumstances of the character and explain how these impact on character choices
  • 2.5 Further define character through scripts, identifying the objectives, actions and tactics in the scene
  • 2.6 Explore the connection between text and character by rehearsing and performing short scenes from a range of texts
Refine screen acting skills
  • 3.1 Read and understand a given scene with relation to story structure and visual screen language
  • 3.2 Break down a scene into units where the action of the scene changes the way the actor pursues a goal
  • 3.3 Identify a character’s objectives and intentions through script analysis
  • 3.4 Rehearse and perform short scenes from a number of different genres
  • 3.5 Review work in progress with appropriate personnel and seek feedback on the performances use of creative and technical requirements
Develop screen awareness and focus
  • 4.1 Rehearse on screen dramatic relationships incorporating screen awareness techniques
  • 4.2 Implement effective personalisation techniques in screen performance
  • 4.3 Identify the subtext inherent in the dramatic action of the screen play enabling further character development
  • 4.4 Reflect and evaluate own acting technique from filmed performance
