To introduce to students the concept of human
development and the ageing process from middle to
old age.
To understand the physical, emotional, and social
consequences of ageing in our society.
To develop the ability to evaluate these concepts
and use the information in professional settings.

Assignment on topic chosen from syllabus 20%
Assignment on topic related to values and
professional development of skills 30%
Assignment on topic chosen from syllabus 20%
Essay on subjects within the course, such as:
- Stereotypes of ageing : their effect on the mental health
of the aged.
- Are the aged still creative and productive in the latter
years?
- What is successful ageing?
- Review of current policies on the aged in the student's
workplace.
- How would you counsel an elderly person who has lost a
spouse or has a terminal illness?
Where possible practical suggestions for change
should be included. Evidence of inquiry and
research and a review of current theories in the
area should be shown in the essay.
Assignment on topic related to values and
professional skills 30%
- Keep a personal journal throughout the term which includes
reactions and feelings about the subjects of ageing, bereavement and death.
The aim of the journal is to assist the student in formulating a personal and
professional philosophy, clarify values, become sensitive to feelings about the
topics and realise how these feelings affect the professional/care given.
Items for inclusion in the journal can be:
- interview/discussion with aged persons
- personal reflections, poems (from student or elsewhere)
- student's reactions to topics presented in class
- student's reactions to readings, radio, TV programs
- analysis of an event/crisis that occurred in the workplace
and related to aged care and welfare including how the event was handled
- comments on what the student has discovered about human
ageing.

To include two parts:
A True false and multiple choice questions, matching exercise. B
Short essay questions.
