Description
This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required for employment as an Advanced Engineering Tradesperson - Level II within the metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries or at equivalent levels in other industries where engineering tradespersons work. The qualification has been specifically developed to meet the needs of apprentices in an engineering trade who choose to study at a higher level during their apprenticeship, or for people who are existing engineering tradespersons.
It provides the skills and knowledge for a person to undertake quality control, exercise good interpersonal and communications skills, work from complex instructions and procedures, provide technical guidance or assistance within the scope of responsibility, prepare reports of a technical nature on specific tasks or assignments, exercise broad discretion within the scope of responsibility, perform work under limited supervision either individually or in a team environment, be responsible for assuring the quality of their own work, provide trade guidance and assistance as part of a work team, perform non-trade tasks which are incidental or peripheral to the primary tasks and facilitate the completion of the whole task, inspect products and/or materials for conformity with established operational standards, operate lifting equipment incidental to their work and assists in the provision of training in conjunction with supervisors and trainers.
This qualification may be accessed by direct entry. While there is no qualification entry requirement it is assumed that the learner is either already a tradesperson with access to structured on and off-the-job training or is an apprentice under an Australian Apprenticeship arrangement. It should not be used as a pre-employment or pre-apprenticeship program.

Packaging Rules
To be awarded the MEM50119 Diploma of Engineering - Advanced Trade, units of competency to the value of one fifty six (156) points must be achieved, chosen as outlined below:- core units of competency listed below (totalling forty nine (49) points)
- elective units of competency to a maximum value of eighty seven (87) points from Group A
- elective units of competency to a minimum value of eight (8) points from Group C
- elective units of competency from Group B to bring the total value to one fifty six (156) points.
Appropriate Group A elective units to the value of eighteen (18) points may be chosen from this Training Package, other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses where those units are available for inclusion in Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diploma qualifications.
Units of competency that contain pre-requisites are identified within the Qualification Packaging Rules on the training.gov.au (TGA) website.
Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) must seek a determination from the industry parties in respect of the allocation of points values for units of competency drawn from other Training Packages or accredited courses. Determination of points requests are to be submitted to the industry parties through Manufacturing Industry Skills Alliance. Refer to the MEM Companion Volume Implementation Guide for information on determination of unit points values.
The minimum requirements for this qualification can also be met by holders of the MEM40119 Certificate IV in Engineering or equivalent, subject to the completion of the Core units of competency as specified above as well as additional Specialisation units drawn from Specialisation units Group A to bring the total value of additional units to at least eight (8) points.
Where higher level Core units (i.e. those required beyond Certificate IV) were included in the Certificate IV as Specialisation units then additional Specialisation units from Group C to the same points value will also need to be completed.
Note: The holder of the MEM31519 Certificate III in Engineering - Toolmaking Trade qualification is only required to complete the Core units of competency specified for this Diploma as well as additional specialisation units of competency from Group A to the total value of twelve (12) points and specialisation units in Group B and Group C (maximum of twelve (12) points from Group B to bring the total value of additional units to forty four (44) points.
